Content Guidelines
These guidelines create a readable, informative, consistent style
that lets you effectively communicate with the public.
- Be considerate and aware of how your information is used:
- Remember people plan their schedules around this information
- If you reschedule or cancel an event that has been posted for
a while or that is coming up very soon, rather than deleting the event,
change the event title and description by adding RESCHEDULED or CANCELED
- The information:
- Must be true and accurate
- Must be legal
- Must be permissible to make publicly available
- Must not be confidential
- Must not be pornographic nor ethnic inflammatory
- Do not be sloppy
- Use proper spelling
- Use proper capitalization
- Use proper punctuation
- Do not capitalize entire words
- Do not use all lower case
- Do not use all upper case
- Do not use exclamation points
- Do not use quotes, except around a title or quote
- Do not use special characters to draw attention, like * and #
- Do not hype your information
- Do not use hyperbole
- Do not use words like greatest and best
- Do not exaggerate
- Be informative
- Set expectations
- List who, what, when, where and how much
- List what is included
- List activities
- List give-aways
- Do sell your event
- Be descriptive, ie. lavish buffet
- Be fun, educational, meaningful, friendly
- Put your event in the best light
- Make people want to go
- Be stimulating
- Be brief
- Less is more
- When in doubt, leave out
- Sentence fragments are fine
- Write "by" instead of "hosted by"
- Write "with" instead of "including"
- Write "lunch at" instead of "have lunch at"
- Write "includes" instead of "price includes"
- Write "visit" instead of "enjoy a visit" or "join us to visit"
- Write "celebrated" instead of "one of the most celebrated"
- Write "picnicking" instead of "with recreational opportunities such as picnicking"
- Do not write "call for more information"
- Do not write "call for price"
- Fine to write "call for" directions, exact day or time
- Do not use abbreviations in the description
- Spell out words
- Fine to use "Rsvp", do not use "RSVP" (do not use all caps)
- For directions
- Use L, R, N, S, E and W
- Usually can leave out ave, blvd, street
- Write the direction followed by the road like "L on Oak"
- For example, "I-95 to Boca Raton, E on Glades, R on Federal"
- For entering data in fields
- Put the appropriate information in the appropriate fields
- Fill in the city, state and country fields
- Put only one email in the email field
- Put only one website in the website field
